Tell them before they chase you. Ask in writing for a payment plan, say what you can afford each month, and keep the reply. Most large organisations have a process for this and none of them will offer it unless you ask. Do not ignore the letter and do not borrow to pay it. If it mentions a court, get free advice before you answer.

A bill you cannot pay is a different problem from a bill you disagree with. The first needs a plan. The second needs a query. Sending the wrong one wastes the weeks you had.

## The difference that decides everything

- A bill: they want money. The answer is a payment plan, in writing, before the deadline.
- A court letter: someone has started a legal process. The answer is advice, then a response by the date.
- A decision letter: benefits, insurance, a grant. The answer is a challenge or an appeal, usually within a fixed window.

Read the first paragraph again and decide which of the three you have. Everything after that follows from it.

## The payment plan request

Four sentences. You are writing about the account and the amount. You cannot pay it in full by the date. You can pay a stated amount each month starting on a stated date. Please confirm the arrangement in writing.

Give a number you can actually keep. A plan you break is worse than the original letter, because it turns a payment problem into a credibility problem.

## What they will usually do

Most large organisations will pause collection while a plan is being agreed, if you ask before the deadline. Some will add a small fee or ask for income details. Very few will refuse a first reasonable request.

The reason to ask early is not politeness. It is that the options get worse after the final notice, and some of them cost more than the debt.

## What not to do

Do not take a payday loan to clear a bill you could have spread. Do not ignore it and hope the letters stop, because they escalate rather than fade. Do not send a payment without the reference, because it may land on the wrong account and prove nothing.

## Keep the record

Keep the letter, what you sent, what they agreed, and each payment. If there is a dispute in six months, that file is the argument. If there is no dispute, it is four minutes of work you never think about again.

## Do this in Swirl

Ask before they chase. A plan you keep beats a letter you ignore.

**A normal chat:** A normal chat suggests contacting them. Swirl writes the request, keeps the reference, and holds the date you promised.

Prompt: I cannot pay this bill in full. Write a short payment plan request with the amount, the monthly figure I can keep, and a start date, and ask them to confirm it in writing:

### Will asking for a payment plan affect my credit score?

Asking does not. Missing payments, or a county court judgment, can. That is why the request is worth sending before the deadline rather than after the final notice arrives.

### What if they refuse a payment plan?

Ask again in writing and offer a different amount you can keep. If they still refuse, contact a free debt advice service before the deadline passes, because they can often negotiate on your behalf.

### Should I pay the smallest bill first?

Pay the one with the nearest deadline and the worst consequence first, which is usually a court letter or a utility. Then work through the rest by date. The smallest bill is not automatically the most urgent one.
