Pick one situation you will actually be in, a market, a school gate, a work call, and learn the twenty sentences that situation needs. Practise them out loud from the first day, badly. An app streak measures tapping, not speaking, and adults quit at the point where they realise they can read the menu but cannot order.

Adults fail at languages for a reason that has nothing to do with age. They study for six months, arrive in the country, and discover they have trained for a written exam they will never sit. Children learn because they are forced to ask for things out loud on the first day.

## Choose one situation, not a language

'Learn Spanish' is a project with no end and no test. 'Order lunch, ask directions, and talk to my daughter's teacher' is three situations you can finish. Each one gives you a win, and the wins stack.

## Learn sentences, not words

A list of two hundred words is not usable under pressure. Twenty whole sentences are. Learn 'could you say that again more slowly' before you learn the word for slow, because the first one is what keeps a conversation alive.

- Six sentences for getting help when you are lost.
- Six for ordering and paying.
- Four for apologising and explaining you are learning.
- Two for asking someone to write it down.
- One for saying goodbye warmly.

## Speak on day one, badly

Out loud, alone, in the kitchen. Reading a sentence silently teaches your eyes. Saying it teaches your mouth, and your mouth is what freezes in the shop. Ten minutes of saying it wrong is worth an hour of tapping it right.

## Accept the plateau and change the input

Around month three the app stops helping, because the problem is no longer recognition. Switch to something with real sentences: a podcast for learners, a children's book you already know the story of, a news site in the language. Comprehension is what unlocks speech.

## Use the language before you are ready

The moment you can order a coffee, order it. The other person will switch to English, and that is fine, you still did it. Confidence comes from the completed transaction, not from the lesson.

## Do this in Swirl

Twenty sentences for one situation beats a two hundred day streak.

**A normal chat:** A normal chat gives you a vocabulary list. Swirl practises the sentences with you, out loud, until the shop stops being scary.

Prompt: Teach me the twenty sentences I need for this situation, then practise them with me out loud, one at a time, and correct me.

### Is it too late at 45?

No. Adults learn grammar and vocabulary faster than children. What adults lose is tolerance for sounding foolish, which is a decision, not an age.

### How long until I can hold a conversation?

For a European language, roughly 150 to 200 hours of real practice for a simple conversation, spread over a year. An app streak of 400 days is often under 40 hours of speaking.

### Can an AI replace a teacher?

It replaces the drilling and the blank page, and it will talk to you at 11pm without judging you. It does not replace a human correcting your pronunciation in real time, so use both.
