# How to help your kid with homework without doing it for them

> A parent's script for homework: ask what they tried, have them teach it back, explain the step not the answer, and let them do the last one alone.

Ask what they have already tried, then ask them to explain the problem in their own words. Explain the step they are stuck on, not the whole answer, and have them do the next one alone. The goal is not a perfect page. It is a kid who can do the next page without you.

The fastest way to finish homework is to do it yourself. It is also the fastest way to make sure the next piece is just as hard. The useful help is smaller and slower: find the exact step where your child is stuck, explain that step, and then get out of the way.

## Start with what they tried

Before you look at the page, ask what they have already tried. If the answer is nothing, ask them to read the question aloud and say what it is asking. Most homework stalls at the first sentence, not at the maths.

## Ask them to teach it back

Say: explain this to me like I was absent. The gaps in the explanation are the gaps in the understanding. You do not need to know the subject to hear a confident explanation fall apart in the middle.

## Explain the step, not the answer

If they are stuck on question three, do question three together and let them do question four alone. If you do all five, they have watched you work. If you do one and they do one, they have worked.

- What is the question asking, in your own words?
- What do you already know that is useful?
- What is the next small step, not the whole answer?
- What would you try if I was not in the room?

## Let them do the last one alone

The last question is the test. It should be done with you quiet, even if it takes longer. If they get it wrong, that is information for the teacher, not a failure of the evening.

## When to stop

Twenty to thirty minutes per subject is enough for most homework. If frustration is rising, stop, write a note to the teacher, and go to bed. A finished page is not worth a kid who thinks the subject is about yelling.

## Do this in Swirl

The script above works better when the AI explains the step, not the answer.

**A normal chat:** A normal chat gives the answer. Swirl explains the step and remembers what they got wrong.

Prompt: Explain this homework step to my child in plain language, then give one similar problem to try alone.

### What if I do not understand the subject?

You do not need to. Ask them to explain it, or ask an AI to explain the step in plain language and then have your child teach it back to you.

### Should I check every answer?

Check the process more than the answer. Ask how they got there. A right answer with no method will not survive the next test.

### What if the homework is too hard?

Write a short note to the teacher saying what was attempted and where it broke down. Do not fake the work. The teacher needs to know.

### How much help is too much?

If you are holding the pencil, it is too much. If you are asking questions and they are writing, it is help.
