Bring one page: what you have noticed at home, what you want to know, and three questions. Ask what your child is good at, what is getting in the way, and what you can do at home for ten minutes a day. Write down the answers before you leave.

Most parent-teacher meetings are fifteen minutes long and cover everything from behaviour to handwriting. Without a page of notes, you leave with a vague feeling and no next step. The page is the meeting.

## Before the meeting

Ask your child what they think the teacher will say. You do not have to agree with it. You just need to know what they are expecting, so the meeting does not become a surprise at the dinner table.

Write down one thing you have noticed at home: a subject that takes longer, a morning that is harder, a book they keep returning to. One concrete observation is worth more than five general worries.

## Three questions that work

- What is my child good at that I might be missing?
- What is the one thing getting in the way right now?
- What can we do at home for ten minutes a day that would help?

## What to bring

One page with your observation, your three questions, and any dates or examples you want to mention. If there is a report or a piece of work you are worried about, bring it, but do not lead with it.

## During the meeting

Listen first, then ask your questions. Write down the answers in the teacher's words, not your summary. Before you leave, agree one action and one date to check it. A meeting with no action is a chat.

## After the meeting

Tell your child one thing the teacher noticed, especially if it is good. Then do the ten-minute thing. The follow-through is what makes the meeting worth having.

## Do this in Swirl

Use the three questions above. Swirl can help you rehearse the meeting.

**A normal chat:** A normal chat gives generic advice. Swirl remembers the term, the teacher's name, and what you agreed to do.

Prompt: Help me prepare for a parent-teacher meeting. Ask me what I have noticed at home, then help me choose three questions.

### What if the teacher is negative?

Ask for the specific behaviour and one example, then ask what would help. A behaviour with an example is workable. A label is not.

### How long should the meeting be?

Most are ten to fifteen minutes. If you need longer, ask for a follow-up rather than trying to cover everything in the slot.

### Should my child come?

Sometimes. Ask the teacher. For older students, having the student in the room can make the next step clearer. For a first meeting about a difficulty, it is often better to talk freely first.

### What if I disagree with the teacher?

Say what you see at home, ask for the evidence, and agree to check again in a few weeks. You do not have to win the meeting. You have to leave with a next step.
