# Can you help me with my homework? Yes, and here is the useful way

> An AI will answer any question you paste in. The version that helps is the one that explains the step, quizzes you, and refuses to hand you work you cannot explain.

Yes, and the order matters. Ask for the step you are stuck on, not the finished answer. Then close the tab and do the next question yourself. If you cannot explain what you handed in, the test will find out, and that is the only part of this that costs you anything.

You are stuck, it is late, and the fastest thing available is a box that will answer anything. That is a real situation and pretending otherwise is why so much homework advice goes unread. The useful question is not whether to use it. It is what to ask it for.

## Ask for the step, not the answer

Paste the question and ask: which step am I stuck on, and what is the next move? You get a smaller thing than the answer, and the smaller thing is what you are actually missing. When you get the whole answer you learn that the answer exists. When you get the step you learn the subject.

## Ask it to quiz you instead

For anything you have to remember, the better request is: ask me five questions from this chapter, one at a time, and do not show me the answer until I try. You will get some wrong, and the wrong ones are the study plan.

## Do the next one with the tab closed

This is the whole method and it takes thirty seconds. After you understand the step, close the tab and do the next question from memory. If you cannot, you did not understand it, you recognised it. Recognition feels like knowing and disappears in an exam hall.

- Explain this step, not the whole answer.
- Why is this the wrong method here?
- Quiz me on this chapter, one question at a time.
- I think the answer is X. Where is my reasoning wrong?
- Give me one similar question to try with no help.

## The line worth not crossing

Handing in work you cannot explain is the one move that reliably costs you. Not because it is cheating, though it often is. Because the next test, the oral exam, the practical, or the first week of the job will ask you to do the thing without the tab open. Everything above keeps you on the right side of that line and still gets the homework finished tonight.

## If it is a subject you have given up on

Say so in the prompt. I do not understand fractions at all, start from the beginning and use small numbers. The most common failure with these tools is asking a question at the level you are supposed to be at rather than the level you are actually at.

## Do this in Swirl

Ask for the step, then close the tab and do the next one. That is the whole method.

**A normal chat:** A normal chat answers the question and you learn nothing you can use in the exam. Swirl quizzes you and remembers what you keep missing.

Prompt: I am stuck on this question. Do not give me the answer. Tell me which step I am missing, then give me one similar question to try alone.

### Will my teacher know?

Sometimes, and not for the reason you think. Writing that is more fluent than everything else you have handed in is obvious to someone who reads forty of these a week. Understanding the step is safer than hiding the answer.

### Can it just do the whole thing if I am out of time?

It will. It is a bad trade: you spend the same evening and end up with nothing you can use in the exam. If you are genuinely out of time, do the first three properly and leave the rest, which is what a teacher would rather see.

### What if the answer it gives is wrong?

Assume it can be, especially with numbers and dates. Check anything you would be embarrassed to defend out loud, and ask it to show the working so you can find the mistake yourself.
